The Anti-Pride Weekend

Here’s a sentence I thought I’d never write:

This weekend, I got drunk at a kid’s beauty pageant with some old pals, and some new pals including Jane of the Go-Gos.

I gotta hand it to Big Daddy and The Writer. I asked them to help me escape SF Pride and they did. Before I headed down they told me they had a surprise for me on Saturday…

After seeing Fahrenheit 9/11 on Friday night, we went back to The Writer’s house and started watching some random Tivo’d stuff – then he pulled out Living Dolls: The Making of a Child Beauty Queen, an HBO documentary about children’s beauty pageants. Spooky and fascinating stuff. Lots of little girls with huge hair and huge mothers.

Saturday we did breakfast and some shopping (I bought three new shirts – in one day!) and then drove down to Orange County to pick up Scott. I still had no idea what was in store for me.

Got to the parking lot of the Coast Anaheim Hotel and met up with The Writer, his roommate, Edith and Jane. At this point only Scott and I were in the dark about the plan.

As we walked down the hallway towards our destination I realized what we were headed towards. And I gave out a bellowing laugh – to which all of my companions immediately surrounded me and told me to pipe down. Jane said if I did that again she’d spank me. If only….

It was $20 to get in but it was a small price to pay for close to 4 hours and over 100 girls participating in the talent competition.

more later…. off to work.

best Ferrick show.

She’s amazing. You should buy her new CD or go see her. Or you should take me to see her. She’s playing in LA this Saturday. I’ll be in LA this Saturday. See where I’m going here?

I thought the solo show that I saw with the recent-Ex at the Fillmore was the best Melissa Ferrick show I’d ever seen. Tonight’s show kicked that shows ass. She was quirky and charming and I realized tonight that I will never date another woman who doesn’t fantasize about becoming a groupie and following her around the country on tour. It was just her and her guitar on the stage at the Great American Music Hall. Great versions of Freedom, Nebraska, Burn this Guitar and my favorite song ever, Everything I Need. Tonight’s version of Drive was fucking (and fucking) awesome. And if you’ve never heard the song you won’t know what that sentence means.

Maybe it’s just because my heart aches and I’m feeling superbitter about romance right now but tonight was a good night for Melissa Ferrick’s music.

Go buy her music so that she’ll keep performing.

Weekend wrap-up

13 bars. 13 beers. 4 Chasers. good times. good times.

it was a fine pub crawl overall, if a bit long. i like the 8 bar crawls; they don’t challenge my endurance as much. but it was great to be hanging out with friends and laughing and enjoying the sun and the hangover pills did seem to help (placebo? maybe…).

played a lot of video games this weekend. playing Ratchet and Clank (checked out from work vidgame library), and Metroid on my new GameCube (all i need is an XBox to complete my console collection). spent most of yesterday fixing Lucky Luna’s sick computer – nothing more satisfying than cleaning and upgrading someone’s machine so they can actually use it.

Six Feet Under is back and it’s been good, IMO although a bit heavier than last season it seems. The death last night was pretty funny I thought. Nate’s gloom is going to get a little heavy if they don’t move him along a bit more – but there’s time. David’s character is improving for sure – he’s actually acting a bit more like the gay boys i’ve known.

next weekend off to see Big Daddy down in LA. escaping Pride. escaping women. running away for a couple days to frolic with my best gay boyfriend and avoid running into any ex-girlfriends.

event on July 7 at EA

If you are interested in game development – particularly as it relates to The Sims and The Sims 2, there is a cool event at EA on July 7th with Will Wright (founder of Maxis) and Lucy Bradshaw (the Exec Prod. of The Sims 2 and the woman who, while not being my boss, basically gives me overall direction at work). Will is totally fun to hear speak and Lucy is really one of the coolest people I’ve ever gotten to work with. I have a tremendous amount of admiration for her – and working with her has been one of the best things about my experience here at Maxis/EA.

let me know if you sign up…

it’s a pub crawl

the annual day-time-drink-on-the-ferry pub crawl is this weekend (intentional). 13 bars for our 13th crawl (not intentional). supposedly the secret is sticking to bottled beer, but i have a feeling i’m not going to be able to drink at every bar. i’m considering the beer/soda water/beer/soda water plan.

should be a fun time… let me know if you want a copy of the map…

it was different to break up with someone before the internet

in the old days. back in the early 90’s, say. when you broke up with someone you were just stuck with your memories and maybe some photos. now you can cyberstalk them and find out things like her new [date/girlfriend/whatever they are calling it] lists her occupation as Home Wrecker this week, as opposed to Unemployed which is what it was the other time I looked at her friendster profile. She clearly thinks much of herself.

that’s fucking lovely. i’ll be becoming a Luddite now.
